Front-loader vs. longtail cargo bike: which is right for you?

Front-loaders (like the Urban Arrow) put kids in a cargo box in front of you — more cargo space, kids visible. Longtails (like the Aventon Abound LR) have kids on the back — more nimble, better for storage. Both work well for NYC families. The right choice depends on your storage situation and how you ride.

What is a front-loader?

A front-loader cargo bike has a large box or bucket mounted at the front of the bike, ahead of the handlebars. Kids sit in the box facing you — you can see their faces while you ride. The Urban Arrow Family is the benchmark front-loader for NYC families. Heavy, stable, and very capable.

What is a longtail?

A longtail cargo bike has an extended rear section designed to carry kids, cargo panniers, or both. Kids sit on the back. The Aventon Abound LR is the standard longtail for NYC families — it fits in a standard elevator, and handles city riding with a more bike-like feel. The Aventon Abound SR is a single-passenger version.

Front-loader: what it's great at

  • Kids always in your line of sight
  • Loading toddlers and young kids is easier — lower and more accessible than a rear seat
  • Large cargo capacity — groceries, bags, and two kids coexist without compromise
  • Urban Arrow rain cover provides complete weather protection

Front-loader: what to watch out for

  • Wider turning radius — harder in tight NYC conditions
  • Needs a bike room, outdoor space, or dedicated indoor area
  • Won't fit in most apartment elevators
  • Parking requires a wider spot

Longtail: what it's great at

  • Much more bike-like to ride
  • Narrower profile — fits through gates and tight lanes more easily
  • Better for buildings with limited storage
  • Lighter overall

Longtail: what to watch out for

  • Kids ride on the back — you can't see their faces while riding (but you can get a mirror!)
  • Less enclosed cargo space — more bags and panniers, less box
  • Rain cover options are less complete — kids need rain suits

Which should you choose?

Choose a front-loader if: you have good storage and you want to be able to easily chat with your kids on rides.

Choose a longtail if: storage is tight, you're in a walkup, elevator access is a constraint, you want a more bike-like ride.

Come try both — The best way to choose is to ride both. They feel genuinely different. We have both at our Brooklyn location and we'll take you through each one.
