How often to service a cargo e-bike

Service your cargo e-bike every 500 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first. In NYC, where potholes, wet roads, and salt cause above-average wear, erring toward more frequent service pays off.

Basic cadence

A family doing a school run plus errands might cover 30–50 miles per week, hitting 500 miles in 3–4 months. Lighter weekend riders might hit the 6-month calendar trigger first. Either way, don't let it go more than 6 months without a check.

What's included in a service

  • Chain: clean, measure for stretch, replace if needed
  • Drivetrain: cassette and chainring inspection, derailleur adjustment
  • Brakes: hydraulic brake fluid check, pad thickness, bleed if needed
  • Tires: pressure, tread depth, sidewall condition
  • Electrical: motor connections, battery terminals, display calibration
  • Cables and housing inspection
  • Headset and bottom bracket bearing check

Signs you need service now

  • Chain skipping or jumping under load
  • Squealing brakes or a soft/spongy brake lever
  • Unusual noise from the motor or bottom bracket
  • Battery losing charge noticeably faster than normal
  • Any wobble in wheels or play in the steering

NYC-specific wear

NYC roads cause accelerated wear. Potholes stress wheels, forks, and frame joints. Winter salt corrodes chains and electrical connections. Dry and lube the chain after wet rides.
