How to lock a cargo bike in NYC

Use two locks — a heavy U-lock through the frame and rear wheel to a fixed object, plus a chain or second U-lock through the front wheel or cargo box. In NYC, always lock to an Inverted U rack or thick signpost. Never use a single lock.

Why cargo bikes need a different approach

Cargo e-bikes in NYC range from $2,000 to $10,000. Thieves know this. The larger frame of a front-loader means a standard U-lock technique doesn't always work the same way as on a regular bike. The goal is not to make your bike unstealable — it's to make it the most difficult target on the block.

The two-lock rule

Always use two locks. Two locks — ideally of different types — means two tools, more time, more noise, more risk.

  • Lock 1: A heavy U-lock (Kryptonite New York, Fahgettaboudit, or Abus Granit X-Plus) through the frame and rear wheel to the fixed object
  • Lock 2: A heavy chain (Kryptonite New York Chain or Abus City Chain X-Plus) through the front wheel, cargo box frame, or a second fixed point
The Sheldon Brown method — Thread the U-lock through the rear wheel only, inside the rear triangle. The wheel can't be removed without defeating the lock, and the frame is secured through the wheel. Good technique on larger-frame bikes.

Where to lock in NYC

  • Inverted U racks — always your first choice. Solid, bolted to the ground, correct height.
  • Thick signposts — legal as long as you don't block pedestrian flow. Verify the sign can't be unscrewed and lifted off.

What to avoid

  • Thin signposts — a bolt cutter can cut a thin pole faster than your lock
  • Wave racks — can sometimes be pulled from the ground
  • Locking only a wheel — a thief will leave the wheel and take the frame

Cargo bike insurance

For a bike worth $2,000–$10,000, insurance is strongly worth considering. Velosurance and BikeInsure both offer policies for e-bikes and cargo bikes including theft coverage.
