Outdoor storage options for cargo bikes in NYC

A heavy-duty weatherproof cover plus two strong locks is the minimum for outdoor storage. Bring your battery inside — it's an expensive component and doesn't benefit from sitting out in the cold or rain.

Covers: what we recommend

There are two categories — purpose-built cargo bike covers and large motorcycle covers that happen to fit.

Bike Parka makes high-quality covers built specifically for cargo bikes. They're designed to fit the geometry of front-loaders and longtails properly, with good weatherproofing and coverage where it counts. Worth the investment if your bike lives outside regularly.

For the Urban Arrow specifically, the Favoto 104-inch motorcycle cover fits well and is significantly cheaper. Good option if you want solid weather protection without the premium price.

Bring your battery inside — The battery is one of the most expensive parts of the bike. Cold temperatures reduce its range and long-term capacity, and leaving it exposed to rain isn't ideal. Most batteries detach easily — make it part of your parking routine.

Locking for overnight outdoor storage in NYC

Many NYC cargo bike riders "claim" a street sign near their building and leave a heavy-duty lock there permanently — so the bike goes straight to a dedicated anchor point every night. Use two locks minimum. A well-lit, visible spot on a busy block is meaningfully safer than a quiet side street.

A GPS tracker adds another layer. See our guide: Registering and tracking your cargo bike →

Insurance

Strongly recommended for bikes stored outside overnight. Check your renter's or homeowner's policy first — some cover bikes up to a certain value. Velosurance offers cargo e-bike specific policies with theft coverage if you need more.
