The key milestone is head control — a child needs to support the weight of a helmet without their head drooping. Most babies reach this between 9–12 months. When in doubt, check with your pediatrician.
The Urban Arrow and Bunch Bike can be fitted with a dedicated infant insert for babies from 3 months. This is a specific product — it cradles the infant in a reclined position. Not all cargo bikes support this, and you should never improvise an infant carry without the correct equipment.
The sweet spot. Most toddlers love the cargo box — contained, comfortable, and can see everything. Make sure the harness fits correctly and check it before each ride.
Cargo bikes are excellent for school runs. Most have total weight limits of 300–500 lbs — with a 180 lb adult and two kids who together weigh 60–80 lbs, you're nowhere near the limit even when they're 8 or 9. Older kids in the box also become part of the ride — they talk to you, point things out, and engage with the city in a way that's impossible in a car.
NYC law requires helmets for all bike passengers and riders under 14. We love Ozmo Helmets, the only e-bike rated kids helmet. See our full guide: Helmet rules for kids on cargo bikes in NYC →
