Where to park a cargo bike in NYC

Cargo bikes can park anywhere a regular bike can — Inverted U racks, signposts, and parking meters. The main challenge is finding a spot wide enough for a long-wheelbase bike. There are no dedicated cargo bike parking spots in NYC yet.

Legal spots

  • Inverted U racks — the best option. Solid, bolted to the ground, wide enough for most cargo bikes.
  • Thick signposts — legal as long as you don't block pedestrian flow and the sign can't be unscrewed.

The size problem

A cargo bike can be 2–3x longer than a standard bicycle. A front-loader like the Urban Arrow often won't fit perpendicular between adjacent racks — you'll need to lock parallel or use a signpost. Longtails like the Aventon Abound LR are closer in length to a regular bike and fit more standard racks.

What's not allowed

  • Blocking a building entrance, doorway, or fire hydrant
  • Parking in or blocking a bus stop or bus lane
  • Blocking a pedestrian ramp or crosswalk

DOT bike corrals

NYC has hundreds of on-street bike corrals — former car parking spaces converted to bike parking. Most accommodate cargo bikes and are often less crowded than sidewalk racks. Find them on the NYC DOT website.

Building access

If your building has a bike room, check with your super or property manager to confirm access and dimensions.

Overnight storage

For anything longer than a few hours, bringing your bike inside is always the better option. See our full guide: Outdoor storage options for cargo bikes in NYC →
